Naples is one of the strongest bases in southern Italy because very different excursions can be reached from the same city. Archaeological sites, a volcano, islands and the Amalfi Coast all compete for limited days, so the real question is not whether there are enough options but which ones best match your trip.

Pompeii: the classic first excursion

Pompeii is the most obvious archaeological day trip for a first visit. It suits travellers who want a large site and are willing to devote a substantial part of the day to exploring it properly.

Herculaneum: smaller and more concentrated

Herculaneum offers a different archaeological experience and can be easier to combine with other plans. It should be considered on its own merits rather than simply as a substitute when Pompeii is busy.

Mount Vesuvius: choose it for the landscape

Vesuvius is about the volcano itself, the crater area and views rather than ancient streets or museums. Weather and transport logistics matter more here than on a normal city sightseeing day.
