Getting Around Naples: Metro, Walking, Taxis and Trains

Learn how to get around Naples by foot, metro, funicular, taxi and train, and how transport choices affect day trips and where to stay.

Naples is a city where walking and public transport work together. Many central sights are best reached on foot, but metro lines, funiculars, taxis and regional trains become important as soon as you move between neighbourhoods or plan excursions outside the centre.

Walking in central Naples

Walking is the simplest way to experience the historic centre and connect nearby sights. Distances can look short on a map while still taking longer than expected because of crowds, hills and the temptation to stop along the way.

Metro

The metro is useful for crossing parts of the city quickly and reducing long walks. It is particularly helpful when your accommodation and sightseeing plans are not concentrated in one neighbourhood.

Funiculars and hills

Naples is not flat. Funiculars can make higher neighbourhoods and viewpoints easier to reach without turning transport into a major part of the day.

Taxis

Taxis can be worth considering for luggage, late arrivals, early departures or journeys that would otherwise require several changes. They are a convenience option rather than the default way to explore central Naples.

Trains for excursions

Regional and local rail connections matter for trips toward Pompeii, Herculaneum and other destinations around Vesuvius. Keep city transport and day-trip transport as separate planning problems.

Ferries for the islands

Capri and other island trips introduce a different transport system built around the port and ferry schedules. Compare them in our day trips from Naples guide.

For orientation, use the Naples map and check where to stay in Naples before booking accommodation around a transport assumption.
